The wooden trumpet mouthpiece is an old concept, but it’s only been perfected in recent decades. Using modern manufacturing and precision design, Perfect Wood trumpet mouthpieces incorporate a 2-piece assembly to create a uniquely comfortable, high-performance playing experience.
2-Piece Design: Wood and Stainless Steel Trumpet Mouthpieces
Perfect Wood trumpet mouthpieces use a two-piece assembly, combining the comfort and playability of hardwood with the solid support and durability of a stainless steel stem. The fit between cup and stem is a critical factor for performance. Our design ensures the most effective seal between components to produce optimal tone transfer from a player’s embouchure to their horn.
Perfect Wood cups are made from African Blackwood, one of the hardest, most dense woods available, and commonly used to make woodwind instruments. Acoustically, the density of the hardwood functions well beyond the range of trumpet frequencies (170 Hz to 1 kHz) and has no sound absorption qualities. This ensures the cup won’t absorb or distort the player’s sound or tone.
Wood is an organic material that complements and enhances the sound produced by a player’s embouchure and mouth cavity. It provides a different mouth-feel for players, one of better comfort and control. The texture of hardwood offers a more robust, non-slip connection contact surface which can greatly improve the player’s tonal range, dynamic control, and articulation.
One factor that makes wood trumpet mouthpieces so comfortable is that wood has low energy conductivity, making it an effective heat insulator. Standard metal mouthpieces have high thermal conductivity, meaning that any heat generated from playing will be quickly absorbed by the mouthpiece. Metal requires significantly more warm-up before it feels warm to the touch. Wood trumpet mouthpieces insulate the warmth generated from playing, helping to create a comfortable playing experience—no matter the surrounding temperature. A few short notes are all that’s needed.
Perfect Wood trumpet mouthpieces were originally designed as a hypoallergenic alternative to metal mouthpieces. Metal sensitivity is a common condition that can cause itching, redness, dry skin, rashes, and swelling. It occurs when the body’s immune system reacts to metal ions through skin contact. Regular, long-term symptoms can leave skin leathery and cracked and can result in uncomfortable playing. African Blackwood is naturally hypoallergenic and won’t cause reactions for people who suffer from these types of allergies.
Stainless Steel Stem
Perfect Wood stems are made from high-quality stainless steel. Stainless steel is harder than brass—and unlike brass, it doesn’t need plating. Stainless steel also doesn’t contain any of the health risks of brass—and is often used for food-grade equipment and utensils. Stainless steel is especially resistant to corrosion, meaning it will never rust and will never require silver or gold plating—and eventual re-plating—needed for brass mouthpieces.
Perfect Wood stems feature a heavyweight, dynamic mass design ideal for wood cups. The large receiver ensures a solid and robust seal with wooden cups. A heavy stem delivers a more focused and stable sound, suitable for responsive performance. Stems are machined to fit deeper than conventional mouthpieces into a trumpet’s receiver—so it almost touches the horn’s leadpipe. This minimizes the gap between mouthpiece and lead pipe, ensuring optimal sound transfer from cup to horn.
Stems are available to fit trumpet, flugelhorn, and cornet receivers. Backbore sizes can be adjusted to custom specifications. All wood cups can be used interchangeably with any Perfect Wood stem. This can be ideal when switching between instruments during a performance. Custom cups can also be designed for different playing styles while preserving the same mouth feel—ensuring a tailored performance without requiring any adjustment of embouchure between instruments.
